Headford
Headford, Co. Galway is a small town near Lisloughrey Lodge Hotel. This North Galway town is a popular angling centre situated along the eastern shore of Lough Corrib and also along the Black River which is the county boundary with Co. Mayo. The popular Greenfields, is Headford’s boating harbour situated on the western side of the town.
Headford is also rich in history, being at the centre of archaeological monuments such as Burial Cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, Norman castles and Monastic sites. One of which is perceived by historians to be the best preserved monastic site in Ireland, The Franciscan Friary of Ross. It was founded at 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh who was a native of the Headford are and a member of the Franciscan order.
